HUGE couple statue, IFUGAO, Luzon, Philippines, 2nd half 20th century
OverviewHuge couple statue of the IFUGAO from amongst others the rice god Bulul. Finely sculpted decorative, heavy hardwood statue. A man and a woman flanked by two Bulul, rice god figures. To date, the rice god Bulul remains to play an important role within the Ifugao community. Diverse status and other objects were used during rituals in relation to the harvest, the marriage, and such. This statue is supposed to give power to the couple to conquer setbacks and live together in harmony. Heavy! hardwood statue. Wood seems to be Nara or Molave. The statue is in good condition. Look carefully at the photos!
