Overview

Tribal PANYA NGOMBE mask of the Congolese PENDE. This mask shows a combination of human and buffalo characteristics. The mask is decorated with carved-in triangular surfaces painted with red and white pigments. These run along the edge, under the ears. These kinds of masks were hung above the door or the window of the residence of the chief. These masks were used during rituals in which the spirits were contacted. The Pende believe that the spirits of their ancestors can influence the quality of their life positively or negatively. They live in the southwest of the Democratic Republic Congo, around the rivers Loango and Kasai.

This mask has evident traces of use and aging, a suitable patina and overall it is in good condition.
