Tribal necklace, PALANPAGANG IFUGAO, Philippines, 2nd half of the 20th century
OverviewTribal necklace called Palanpagang. It is a priest collar, always composed of sometimes large, wrought pieces of mother-of-pearl. This necklace has 7 large pieces of mother-of-pearl decorated in various layers of decorations. These necklaces are worn by men of the Ifugao tribe and the Kalinga tribe. The pieces of mother-of-pearl show different colours depending on from which angle you look at them. The pieces of mother-of-pearl are sometimes unwrought; others like this one carry several lines with a very fine engraving. See my other Ifugao items. The cord is made of woven rattan. This necklace is in good condition.
