Old wooden PHEMBA statue of the YOMBE, DR Congo, 1960-70
OverviewOld decorative PHEMBE female statue of the YOMBE from the DR Congo. Looks like a tribally used statue with rubbing traces of palm oil on spots like the back, but this is deliberately made that way. This doesn't take away the fact that it is a beautiful statue! On the left knee is a turtle, a symbol for protection, the same way the shell protects the turtle. Furthermore, the turtle symbolizes confidence, resilience and wisdom. The hole in the left leg was created by an insect that is specifically found in hard wood. Also some damage at the chest, right under the neck and a hole in the round base of the statue. Beautiful patina and appearance, 50 - 60 years old. Look closely at the photos!
