Imposing decorative Ngil mask, FANG, Gabon, ca 1950
OverviewA beauty! this great old Ngil mask of the Fang from Gabon. This mask belongs to the first generation of objects made as a decorative object. Manufactured within the Fang community but not used tribally. In any case, a very beautiful and large object. Masks like this were worn by members of the Ngil, a secret brotherhood responsible for policing and justice in Fang communities. Masks like these were intended to depict a terrifying entity and were used in ceremonies involving spectacular dances. You can think of the Ngil as agents of social control. In simple terms, the ceremonies mainly consisted of scaring off those who had evil intentions. This mask is made to impress.
This mask has a varied crust-like patina, here and there a chip along the edge, but is in fairly good condition throughout. Old age is certainly visible. Look carefully at the photos and the size.
