Female harvest statue of the TERAI, Nepal, ca 1970
OverviewThe Terai or Tarai is a lowland region in northern India and southern Nepal that lies south of the Himalayan foothills, the Sivalik Hills, and north of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. This lowland belt is characterized by grasslands, savannah, forests and swamps. The Tharu and the Dhimal are the collective name for a variety of ethnic groups. Agriculture is the base of industry. Rice, potatoes, maize, wheat, peas, lentils, mustard, sugar cane, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, garlic and chili are grown here.
Best known from Nepal are the putali, Namaskara Mudra greeting statues. A lot less known and rarer are the statues from the Terai region. I will be offering a number of these in the near future that have been bought in situ from families through my network. They are largely statues that emphasize the rural character.
This is a medium-sized statue with a strong style of its own and a powerful appearance. A woman holds a basket on her head with outstretched arms. Striking design of the arms, back and legs. Partially filled in-situ shrinkage crack at the front. Obtained in situ from our own network and in good condition throughout. See the pictures
