Ancient wooden ritual "spoon" from Buddhism, Nepal, early 20th century
OverviewVery old ritual "spoon" used by a Vajracharya. A Vajracharya is a higher caste Buddhist priest. This object is used during the OHM puja rituals in which a deity is honored. Believers put a shovel of oil (yak butter) in large bowls with fire to keep the eternal fire burning and honor a Deity with this. The Vajracharya uses this object as a spoon and adds better clarified butter in a bowl. This ritual is mainly practiced in the Newari region in Nepal. The 'spoon' is placed on a stand.
