Old devotion altar statue, Anlo people, South Togo, mid 20th century
OverviewThe Anlo are a subgroup of the Ewe and live spread across southern Togo, south-west Benin and southern Nigeria.
Enchantingly beautiful statue! made by a great cutter. What is striking is the cavity in the abdomen in which a stone has been placed. The figure is seated on an Akan stool. The arms are bent next to the body with the palm facing upwards.. a posture of receptivity. The face is refined and the rings in the neck are typical of the Anlo. Varied patina in various layers.
