Overview

Kishikishi/Kenene, Pende

Very special tribal statue of the (eastern) Pende, DR Congo. Because of the special symbolism, I will go into this in more detail.

Kishikishi are placed on the roof and are often 70 cm or larger. Kinene have a wide aspect of use; they can stand outside the door to let dreams in for the woman who wants to have children or they can be a statue that is centrally located in the living space so that you see it first in the morning and last in the evening. It also has the role of communicator to the ancestors. The woman plays a prominent role in the Pende. Often the first woman treats/cares for the man for the Kinene for a specific purpose. This statue also shows the influence of the Kwese and the Mbala, which means you can conclude that this statue comes from the border area. Also very normal there because the Pende have been living there since about 1931. They had fled there after an uprising in Angola. Pende means rebel. They prefer to call it Apende, which means great rebel. It is also clear that this statue has been outside for a long time. A special tribally used object!!
