Passport mask from the LEGA, DR Congo, 1970s 20th century
OverviewVery beautifully carved decorative passport mask from the Lega with a beard. A member of the Bwami society represents a secret association whose members monitor the tribe's codes of conduct and the administration of justice. Beard is made of natural fibers. Remnants of kaolin colouring are visible as well as some mika flakes. The last photo shows a rack with these types of masks. They were hung there at the start of a meeting.
