Old tribally used disease mask, IBIBIO, Nigeria, 1920-40

Very strong mask, this very old tribal, intensively used disease mask from the Ibibio from Nigeria. Used during rituals to prevent diseases or to heal. The lower jaw is loose, which is how it should be. The string in it is more recent than the mask itself. Very powerful appearance. The character of this mask is further enhanced by the traces of use and aging that are evident and appropriate to the age and use. The mask is placed on a professional custom-made stand.
