Large old ancestor pole statue, KUSASI, northern Ghana, mid 20th century
OverviewVery heavy and large, old ancestor pole statue of the KUSASI from the north of Ghana. Minimalist in design but with a lot of powerful expression. This is partly due to the relatively large head compared to a slender body with arms that sit against the body. On top of the head, traces of cutting with a knife are visible. This was done to transfer the power of the image to whoever wielded that knife or sword. At the height of the belly button, the image continues into the part that has been in the ground for a long time. It is a beautiful hardwood type of wood, remarkably heavy. Reminiscent of ironwood. Superb patina and erosion. An authentic tribal statue with a lot of soul! please take a good look at the photos for the condition. The image is placed on a stand that is included.
