Overview

Exceptional statue this very old fertility statue of the Iatmul, middle Sepik from Papua New Guinea. Very strong presence and never seen before ... the connection between the nose and the body. The eyes are cowrie shells. Stylistically very beautiful statue and large in size. On top of the head has been tapped with a sword or knife during use, which is done to give the statue strength. The patina is convincing and appropriate for the use and age. The statue comes from Mrs. Jansens from the Maastricht region and belonged to her parents who stayed as colonials in Papua New Guinea. Price in a gallery would be more than double my price! See the photos for the condition.
