Altarpiece of the BAULE, Ivory Coast, 1960-70
OverviewStriking appearance this unusual altar statue of the Baule. Mask/statue ... both actually. The face is almost abstract with sharp facial features. On top of the head a red cloth with pockets with natural fibers on the forehead. The neck is round and ends in a somewhat wider edge. This was also glued to a base. It is no longer there but the statue, mask stands solid on its own. Metal nails are visible around the eyes and on the neck. Varied patina. See the photos!
