Very large festival "sickness" mask, Nepal, ca 1970

A striking and impressive appearance this very large festival mask. At the many festivals in Nepal you will find a range of different masks. This one really stands out! A so-called disease mask, hence the deformed shapes in the face. It must serve for protection against diseases and for healing diseases but I suspect it was used in a theatrical setting. Grotesque facial features and strikingly soft in color. In a few places some gold paint is still visible. Good condition!
