Great and a mystery, Congolese stone fetish statue, 1st half 20th century
Overview
An exceptionally fascinating object!! This Congolese fetish statue that cannot be directly linked to a specific tribe. That makes it all the more mysterious. It is made of stone and completely blackened by the fire but it does not smell of smoke. So it may be much older than I cautiously estimate here. An unusual head, somewhat elongated and with a sharp pointed nose. Under a magnifying glass it is visible that the eyes are made of glass or ceramic. Patina indicates fire. A charge can be felt on the belly. So the statue is probably still charged. It is black but does not make a mess. A string is attached crossed around the charge on the belly.
The statue was once bought at the Marché des voleurs (market of thieves) in Kinshasa by a stewardess who worked for Sabena. That was before 1950. I am supplying a nice hard wooden block with it.
Length: 14 cm
Weight of the statue: 216 grams
Total weight: 437 grams
Origin: DR Congo
Date: 1st half of the 20th century (probably close to 1900)
Provenance: Obtained in front of the Marché des voleurs in Kinshasa by Mrs. Mertens from Hoeiaart, Belgium
